History winds around every corner of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri (an area roughly defined between the Cliff Drive Scenic Byway and Independence Avenue, and Chestnut Avenue and Jackson Avenue through to Elmwood Avenue) – home to over 150 historic properties, two National Register Historic Districts and nearly 7,000 residents.
In this history crawl walking tour, attendees will explore early 20th century Kansas City, viewing several landmarks and houses of the era and learning about the notable figures who resided and continue to live in the neighborhood.

About the tour:
Our history crawl tour guide will be historian Michael Bushnell, author and publisher at The Northeast News.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. at The Colonnade in Concourse Park, where tour participants will get their audio devices and enjoy a brief overview presentation with a beverage. The tour will last two hours, featuring stops at notable historical and architectural sites throughout the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood before concluding at the Kansas City Museum where attendees are invited to attend a complimentary reception with Michael Bushnell.
Please note you’ll tally over 2,000 steps in this walking tour, featuring some stairs and slopes. Ticket holders are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and to dress appropriately for the weather; the tour will proceed rain or shine.

About Michael Bushnell:
Michael Bushnell is the long-time Publisher of The Northeast News, an award winning, weekly community media outlet that serves the Historic Northeast neighborhoods of Kansas City, MO.
Michael tapped his extensive collection of antique Kansas City postcards and began to publish a different card each week with a brief description of the view, the postcard’s publisher and any personal message written by the sender. The weekly column led to two books, Historic Postcards of Old Kansas City, Volumes I and II. Both are a compilation of historic postcard columns from the first twenty years of publication in The Northeast News.
Since the book’s publication, Michael has been a guest history lecturer for the Westport Historical Society, North Kansas City Hospital, the North Kansas City Community Center, the State Historical Society of Missouri and the Kansas City Museum. He’s also led summer History Walks for the Kansas City Museum and was the Community Curator for the Museum on numerous occasions over the last fifteen years.
Michael also collaborated with award winning Outdoors writer Kenny Kieser on The Great Flood of 1993: re-visiting an epic natural disaster, currently an exhibit at the Kansas City Museum.
Michael and Chris live in the heart of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood in a restored Craftsman Shirtwaist home with their fur-baby, Ella the Destroyer. Among other pursuits, including collecting old Kansas City postcards and riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and traveling to various out of the way destinations throughout the Midwest.
