Kansas City Museum
Position Title:  Barista/Culinary Associate for Elixir

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Kansas City Museum is looking to hire Baristas/Culinary Associates for Elixir, the Museum’s Soda Fountain area—a 690 square foot café that seats 18-20 people.  It is located Downstairs at Corinthian Hall adjacent to a prep kitchen and on the same floor as the Billiard Room, restrooms, and a catering kitchen.

Elixir serves:  1) a menu of grab-and-go pre-packaged and ready-to-serve food and beverage items including sandwiches, salads, charcuterie plates, cookies, chips, sodas and other carbonated beverages, juices, and more; and 2) a menu of prepared food and beverage items including ice cream scoops, sundaes, phosphates, coffee and espresso drinks, tea, wine, beer, select cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks.

Customers may purchase food and beverages and eat in Elixir or on the grounds of the Museum (weather permitting) or they may take their items to go.

Elixir is open a total of 18 hours per week as follows:
Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. (4 hours)
Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (4 hours)
Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (5.5 hours)
Sunday from Noon to 4:30 p.m. (4.5 hours)

Elixir’s hours and menu will increase strategically over time.

The Barista/Culinary Associate primarily will be responsible for daily opening and closing procedures; making and serving espresso, coffee, and tea beverages, alcoholic beverages, ice cream scoops, sundaes, phosphates, etc.; serving pre-packaged and ready to serve foods (i.e. sandwiches, salads, cookies, muffins, pastries, etc.); restocking supplies and keeping track of inventory; maintaining food safety standards; operating café equipment; using the point of sale system to process purchases; and cleaning protocols. Some food prep will be required, for example, creating charcutier boards, light sandwiches, and salads.

This is a part-time, non-exempt position.  The anticipated hours are 10-20 per week with a starting hourly rate of $16/hour. This hourly compensation does not include tips, i.e., all tips are in addition to the hourly wage.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2+ years in the restaurant industry.
  • Prior server training and alcohol responsibility training and current food handler license preferred.
  • Experience being a barista and a bartender, making espresso drinks and alcoholic beverages.
  • Knowledge of point-of-sale systems and opening and closing procedures.
