John Murillo’s book, Kontemporary Amerikan Poetry, is an examination of the legacy of institutional, accepted violence against Black people and Latinos and the personal and societal wreckage wrought by long histories of subjugation. The book’s content aligns with the tenets of the Kansas City Museum’s Restorative Poetics Initiative which examines how poetry can be a vehicle for social justice and healing.
Kontemporary American Poetry won the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award in 2021. Join us in celebration of National Poetry Month for a discussion and dissection of some of the selected poems in Murillo’s book with Glenn North, Kansas City Museum Director of Inclusive Learning who is also a Rockhurst University adjunct faculty of English. This FREE program is presented in collaboration between the Rockhurst University Center for Arts and Letters and the Kansas City Museum.
