Join the Museum’s Curator of Collections Lisa Shockley for a guided conversation centered around a 19th century steamboat whistle. By the 1850s, and the incorporation of Kansas City, riverboats were commonplace. They carried everyone and everything needed in our growing town. Whistles identified their ships, and acted as their voice. In 1852, an Act of Congress mandated their use on all riverboats, enabling communication and making the riverways safer.
