The Mbembe Milton Smith Poetry Series is a new program under the umbrella of the Kansas City Museum’s Restorative Poetics Initiative.

This inaugural book discussion and signing will feature Anastacia-Reneé who is a queer writer, educator, interdisciplinary artist, and playwright. Reneé will share works from her two most recent books Sidenotes from the Archivist and Here in the (Middle) of Nowhere, both from HarperCollins/Amistad publishing. Side Notes From The Archivist was selected as one of “NYPL Best Books of 2023,” and, The American Library Associations (RUSA) “Notable Books of 2024”

Anastacia-Reneé’s poetry and performances are an assertion of presence that counteract the erasure of those who have been marginalized by American society, which are key components of restorative poetics. A book signing will follow the reading and attendees can enjoy small bites and drinks at the Elixir soda fountain prior to the show.

This program was made possible by a generous grant from the Cave Canem Foundation, Inc.
